Sinn Féin area representative Conor D. McGuinness has expressed his support for nurses taking part in today’s strike.
McGuinness said:
“The Government has failed to deal with the recruitment and retention crisis in nursing and midwifery and I wish to offer my support for the strike action that INMO nurses and midwives began this morning.
“I visited nurses at both CUH and MUH this afternoon. It’s clear that strike action is the very last thing nurses want to undertake, but regrettably, they have been given no other option but to take to the picket lines.
“It’s particularly galling to hear An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe tell nurses and midwives that there is no money in the pot to address their modest demands, while at the same time they give themselves and other TDs a pay rise.
“As a trade unionist I will always stand with workers that seek to improve their pay and conditions. Nurses deserve to have their work and service valued, and they are entitled to dignity and safety in their work.”
