McGuinness requests EPA air quality monitoring for Dungarvan

cropped-img_7587.jpgSinn Féin Councillor Conor D. McGuinness has written to the Environmental Protection Agency to request on-site monitoring of air quality in Dungarvan.

McGuinness said:

The EPA manages the national ambient air quality network. The agency also measures the levels of atmospheric pollutants such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and particulate matter. All of these pollutants can have serious health implications for individuals that are exposed to them in the air.

“I have received many comments and complaints over recent months about air quality in Dungarvan. People are concerned about the impact of coal smoke and other pollutants on their health and wellbeing.

“The EPA can undertake monitoring and produce data on air quality in Dungarvan. The monitoring can provide real-time information and identify pollutants and point to likely sources.

“As we come into springtime more people will be outside walking, playing and exercising. We owe it to ourselves to ensure a clean and safe environment for ourselves and our children.

“I have written to the EPA requesting that they implement an air quality monitoring plan for Dungarvan without delay.”
