Demand for swimming pool in Dungarvan ‘not going away’ – McGuinness

Sinn Féin Councillor Conor D. McGuinness has said that the demand for a swimming pool is not going away, and that there is an onus on the Council to play a central part in delivering the facility for Dungarvan and West Waterford. He made the comments as Councillors are set to discuss a report on the matter commissioned by Waterford City and County Council.

McGuinness said:

“The demand local for a public swimming pool in Dungarvan is not going way, and if anything it is increasing. There is a clear argument to be made that our town and surrounding hinterland should have a public pool of its own, but for local use and as a facility for visitors to the area.

“I and a number of other councillors fought hard to have the council commission a report as the first step towards developing a swimming pool in Dungarvan.

“The report was tasked with examining the feasibility for building a pool in the town and came about as a result of significant pressure from local clubs, parents, young people and public representatives.

“I have been calling for a public swimming pool for Dungarvan since being first elected to Waterford City and County Council in 2019.

“Councillors will meet this week to discuss the report and the findings. My message at that meeting will be very clear – the demand is there, the population is there and both the Council and Government need to work with the community to deliver a public swimming pool.

“I believe Dungarvan not only deserves, but also needs, its own 25m public swimming pool.

“A public swimming pool would provide an essential piece of sports infrastructure and a fantastic public amenity for recreation and tourism.Such a community resource would also be vital for lifeguard and water safety training.”
