McGuinness ‘confident’ on affordable and cost rental scheme for Dungarvan

Sinn Féin Councillor Conor D. McGuinness has described recent discussions with officials from Waterford City and County Council as ‘positive’ and that he is ‘confident’ that a mix of affordable and cost rental homes can be delivered on the Fairlane site located between the N25 and Linear Park.

McGuinness said:

“I recently mooted the Fairlane site, adjacent to the N25 and located between Lidl and Currans, as being ideal location for the Council to build affordable housing, including an element of cost rental.

“My discussions with housing officials have been very positive and I am confident that a mix of affordable and cost rental homes can be delivered on this site. I have asked that the design and planing stage is carried out as quickly as possible, taking into account the need to get a sensible and forward-looking traffic plan for the area.

“There is a huge need for affordable housing in Dungarvan. The housing crisis has become a housing catastrophe under the current coalition government. We need to see more social houses delivered, greater turn around of vacant units, more private development, and the delivery of serviced sites for those who wish to build themselves.

“Affordable housing has a huge part to play in addressing the crisis locally. I have been very critical of government policy, which has seen affordable schemes solely focused on cities and larger urban areas. I have long advocated a more pro-active and ambitious approach and have been lobbying officials to tart work on sites in towns and villages across Co. Waterford that would be suitable for affordable housing schemes.
