Sinn Féin Councillor Conor McGuinness has said that Uisce Éireann (formerly Irish Water) must respond to the concerns expressed by residents of St. Brigid’s Terrace and surrounding parts of Dungarvan over proposed water mains works that have the potential to cause huge disruption to houses on the street and in the wider area.

McGuinness said:

“Uisce Éireann has commenced work to replace old water mains at St. Brigid Terrace, St. Thomas Street, Keating Street, St. Martin’s Terrace and Fitzgerald Street. This will have an impact on homes in the area as the current water supply enters the properties from the rear. Residents are concerned that the change will require disruptive and costly changes to their plumbing systems.

“Uisce Éirean has provided zero information to residents except for a card warning of ‘interruptions to water supply from August to November’. It is unfair that residents have been kept in the dark regarding the potential impact to their homes.

“I challenged Uisce Éireann on this issue and have received the full scope of works, which I have shared with residents – however the documentation is silent on how the utility proposes to reconnect homes to the water supply when the older mains is decommissioned. It doesn’t provide detail on the kind of retrofitting that will be done to homes and it doesn’t outline who foots the bill or takes responsibility for these works.

“Uisce Éireann has undergone a costly rebrand over recent months and senior managers in the utility have told me that their aim is to improve their reputation. If they wish to rehabilitate their reputation they need to begin by treating people with respect and sharing relevant information with those impacted. Uisce Éireann still have questions to answer when it comes for their plans for this part of Dungarvan.
