Sinn Féin councillor Conor D. McGuinness has called on Government to assist Waterford City and County Council with its storm damage bill.
“I am calling on Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan to provide Waterford Council with €7.5m to offset the projected bill to repair damage to roads in Waterford caused by recent weather events including Storm Babet.
“Our own council roads department is spending an enormous €100,000 per day to repair damage caused due to flooding, this has to be done but financially it isn’t sustainable.
“We have already suffered cuts to our general roads budget and to our active travel budget – and no we’re a further €7.5 million down as we just try to get to where we were before this Autumn’s storms.
“I don’t hold out much hope of Minister Ryan coming to our rescue given his negative attitude towards the regional and rural roads networks but it’s important all public representative, irrespective of party or politics, send a united message to the Department. “
