Sinn Féin Councillor Conor D. McGuinness has welcomed the announcement of €320,000 funding by the NTA to construct a footpath between Ballinroad cross and the Clonea Roundabout.
McGuinness said
“I am delighted that the NTA has finally announced funding for this long-awaited and much needed project.
“This footpath should have been delivered a decade or more ago. It should certainly not have been subject to unnecessary delays.
“Alongside local residents and other public representatives I have been calling for a footpath to be installed here since I was first elected.
“This project went to public consultation in 2022 after much campaigning. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive and the public demand for this piece of infrastructure could not have been clearer.
“Unfortunately funding wasn’t forthcoming at that stage. While a cynic might suggest political interference it’s probably best left o the Minister for Transport to account for the delay,
“Thankfully after a lot of campaigning the NTA has finally released the money required for the Council to progress this project.
“I want to thank the many people who have contacted me about this, who supported the campaign, who made submissions and who ensured this footpath stayed on the agenda.
“My hope is that work can progress very soon and I continue to do all that I can to drive this project on.”
