The petition calling on Waterford City and County Council to begin developing a public swimming pool in Dungarvan has attracted almost 2,000 signatures. The petition is still open and all residents of West Waterford are encouraged to add their names to the growing demand for a public pool.
Dungarvan Councillor Conor D. McGuinness has been campaigning for a public swimming pool for the town over recent years and set up the petition in support of the project.
McGuinness said:
“Its fantastic to see that so many local people have added their voices to this call. Its a real testament to the individuals that began this campaign – swimmers, parents, clubs, schools and those involved in promoting water safety. They deserve huge credit for their work to date.
“Council management has signalled their unwillingness to develop a public pool in the town, while a small minority of local councillors have registered their concern about the cost of building or running such a facility.
“Other towns with similar demographics and catchment areas have very well run public pools, and the feasibility study commissioned by the Council last year makes clear that there is sufficient demand locally to make this project worthwhile.
“If this project is to proceed it needs to be kept high on the political agenda locally, and this petition helps to underscore the huge demand that exists out there.
“The petition remains open and I would encourage everyone to make sure their voice is heard and to sign the petition.”
The petition can be signed online at www.change.org/DungarvanSwimmingPool or contact Conor on 087 9345603 to sign a paper copy.
