Sinn Féin councillor and general election candidate Conor D. McGuinness has said that support from Waterford City and County Council will be critical for the development of facilities to accommodate the huge growth in members and activities at Dungarvan United AFC.
McGuinness made the comments after he and Sinn Féin TD David Cullinane had met with committee members at the club grounds in Kilrush.
McGuinness said:
“I am glad that a resolution is finally in sight when it comes to securing additional space for pitches to support the clubs 37 teams and the huge amount of activity that takes place at the club. Land to the rear of the Crystal Gym has been purchased by the club, which will facilitate the development of plitches and other facilities. While it’s unfortunate that this has ttaken so long I am glad that the deal is finally over the line.
“The Crystal Gym building itself has been acquired by the Council and I believed this building would provide an excellent amentity both for the club and the wider community. Dungarvan United caters to men and women, girls and boys. There is a need for dedicated female changing facilities and this building would be ideally situated and laid out to cater to that need.
“I will continue to work with all parties to support the continued growth and success of this fine, community-based club.”
