McGuinness: Fianna Fáil is ‘actively undermining’ future of Waterford Airport

Sinn Féin councillor and general election candidate Conor D. McGuinness has said that Fianna Fáil is ‘actively undermining’ the future development of Waterford Airport. He called on Fianna Fáil’s Mary Butler to clarify her party’s position after her party colleague junior Transport Minister James Lawless told the Dail that investing in the airport would be like ‘buying a pig in a poke’.

McGuinness said:

“Fianna Fáil is actively undermining the future of Waterford Airport in both word and deed.  The comments by James Lawless very clearly illustrated the disdain and disinterest his party has in Waterford Airport and Waterford in general. On their watch the coalition government has dragged its heels. At every opportunity has refused to make any commitment to the future of Waterford Airport.

“Mary Butler must now clarifies the Fianna Fáil position – does she share her colleague’s conclusion that investing in the airport is like ‘buying a pig in a poke’?

“Waterford is the economic engine of the South East region. We need greater balance in regional development, we need a greater focus in regional investment. The return of scheduled routes to Waterford Airport is critical to economic development and growth for Waterford and the wider region.

“This coalition has been the most Dublin-centric government in the history of the state. Its time for a major reset in Irish politics and a new government that invests in our people and the future.”
