Sinn Féin councillor and general election candidate Conor D. McGuinness has secured a commitment that Dungarvan will be prioritised for funding under the next round of Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF).
McGuinness said:
“URDF funding provides significant capital investment for large scale developments in towns. Unfortunately this funding has bypassed Dungarvan over recent years, however I secured a commitment from Waterford City and County Council management that Dungarvan will be prioritised in the next round of applications. What this means is that the next application from Waterford Council for this fund will be for a major capital project in Dungarvan.
“Dungarvan and West Waterford have been left behind when it comes to investment, infrastructure and public services. I have been working to address this imbalance and to champion towns, villages and rural communities in the County.
“Dungarvan is an outlier in that it doesn’t have any of the basic community infrastructure one might expect to see in a similarly sized town. There is no community centre in Dungarvan or Abbeyside, and West Waterford is the only region in the state not served by a dedicated Family Resource Centre.
“This commitment gives hope that with a strong application and national support we may be able to deliver the community infrastructure so badly needed in Dungarvan.
“The lack of national representation locally, coupled with the abolition of our town council and amalgamation of the County and City councils means that there is a deficit of democratic representation here. Put simply, we need a TD for Dungarvan and West Waterford.
“I will continue to stand up for Dungarvan and to work with Council management, stakeholders, agencies and local representatives to deliver for Dungarvan.”
