Sinn Féin general election candidate and West Waterford councillor Conor D. McGuinness has called for action and investment from Uisce Éireann to address the serious water issues affecting Lismore, and said that the outgoing government parties have to accept responsibility for allowing problems to build to breaking point over the past decade and more.
McGuinness made the comments in Lismore having met with residents and business owners that have been affected by the ongoing water outage in the town.
Speaking to The Avondhu McGuinness said:
“Its utterly unacceptable that huge parts of Lismore are without water for the third successive day. Families are forced to buy water, people with special care needs are left struggling, businesses can’t operate fully, and over a thousand school students have lost a second day. The knock on impact of the school closure on work and business is significant and needs to also be acknowledged.
“Uisce Éireann has utterly failed Lismore. Persistent issues with water pressure and frequent leaks and outages are making life difficult for residents, while the failure by Government to invest in increased capacity is exacerbating the housing crisis in the area.
“This is not a new problem – it has been many years in the making. The neglect shown by successive Governments to Lismore and the wider West Waterford area has resulted in a lack of investment and crumbling infrastructure. Little wonder when West Waterford has not had a local TD for a decade, and during the same period say the abolition of town councils and the loss of the county council.
“This neglect by the government parties has seen the issues with Lismore’s water infrastructure build to breaking point. The neglect and indifference needs to end. We need a new government, with clear plans, fresh ides and a new approach. The only way to deliver a new government in this election is to vote Sinn Féin.”
