Sinn Féin general election candidate and council group leader Conor D. McGuinness has called on Uisce Éireann to urgently upgrade the sewage system that serves Bonmahon as a matter of urgency. He made the call following a meeting between Waterford City and County Council, and Uisce Éireann officials help in City Hall.
Cllr. McGuinness said:
“The waste water system that serves Bonmahon is inadequate and not fit for purpose. The time for a significant upgrade has long passed. There are very serious concerns regarding water pollution to streams and rivers, as well as to the sea. Human health is put at risk, and biodiversity is threatened. The situation is also acting as a barrier to the sustainable development of the area for local families.
“The copper coast is a unique part of Co. Waterford with beautiful scenery, unspoiled beaches, great communities. Irish Water are aware of the need for a system upgrade here but it seems to be far down their list of priorities.
“Hand-wringing and soundbites from those that have been in Government over the past five years are not good enough. We need to see real delivery when it comes to water and waste wter infrastructure across Waterford. I am appealling to all politicians to support the community in Bonmahon and push for the delivery of an upgrade sooner rather than later.”
