Aglish secondary school students must not be left behind – McGuinness

Sinn Féin general election candidate Cllr. Conor D. McGuinness has offered his full support to parents of secondary school students from Aglish in their campaign to secure school bus places for their children.

McGuinness was speaking after he and party colleague Cllr Donnchadh Mulcahy met with local parents in Aglish Community Centre to discuss the issue.

McGuinness said:

“The outgoing Education Minister Norma Foley (FF) has presided over a chaotic school transport system that has failed parents and left so many children behind.

“The recommendations of the Minister’s own report stated that changes to the ‘catchment area’ rule and an emphasis on consultation with parents should have been implemented in time for September 2024. Instead the Minister sat on her hands and all but disappeared in August and September.

“Donnchadh and I have offered these parents our full support. My hope is that next week brings a new, Sinn Féin-led government that will immediately set about implementing our radical school transport plan, however we will support these parents and children come what may.

“We have submitted motion on the matter for the December district council meeting, and will continue to engage with the Department of Education and Bus Éireann to resolve the issues.”
