Sinn Féin TDs raise need for safety improvements for Ballymacarbry.

Waterford’s two Sinn Féin TDs joined forces in the Dáil to advocate for urgent road safety measures for Ballymacarbry, in particular adjacent to Ballymacarbry National School.

During a debate on Road Safety in the Dáil on Thursday afternoon both Deputies David Cullinane and Conor McGuinness highlighted the issue and called for funding.

McGuinness said:

“The R671 linking Dungarvan and Clonmel needs urgent intervention. I am speaking in particular of Ballymacarbry. We need safety improvements at the national school in Ballymacarbry on the R671.

“When we speak about road safety, speed is one of the key talking points. Undoubtedly, one of the major causes of accidents on our roads is people driving too fast. However, we cannot ignore the impact on road safety of the quality and standard of our roads.

“In my constituency of Waterford, I see it all too often. A major contributing factor to accidents, including very serious accidents, is the condition of the road. There are stretches of road where there adjustments to junctions are needed. Dangerous bends need to be taken out of roads. There are places where the road surface leaves a lot to be desired.”

David Cullinane said;

“I pay tribute to the committee of the Ballymacarbry road action group, which was established on the foot of a meeting last October.

“There were real road safety issues in Ballymacarbry village, in particular a need for traffic calming measures to be implemented at Ballymacarbry National School. The group has since engaged with Waterford City and County Council. My understanding is that it is making an application for traffic calming measures on the R671 to the Minister of State’s Department.”
