Sinn Féin TD for Waterford Conor D. McGuinness has said the Government is “actively stifling” the economic potential of the South East by refusing to fund the long-awaited runway extension at Waterford Airport.
Deputy McGuinness raised the issue directly in the Dáil this evening [Tuesday 13 May]alongside his Sinn Féin colleague David Cullinane TD, demanding a clear commitment from the Minister to deliver the €12 million in State funding needed to complete the project.
“Planning permission is in place. Regional funding is secured. The project is ready to go. But the Government continues to drag its feet. Meanwhile, €200 million has been signed off for Cork Airport – and let me be clear, we don’t begrudge Cork its investment. But Waterford and the South East are being left behind again.”
“This is a blatant failure of political will. The South East isn’t asking for special treatment – just fairness. Instead of balance, the Taoiseach seems to have his thumb – or his whole hand, in fact – on the scales.”
Deputy McGuinness said the South East has waited long enough.
“Every delay stifles jobs, tourism, and regional growth. The Minister’s reply tonight was the same old vague lines about ‘stakeholder engagement’ – but there is nothing left to examine. What we need now is action.”
Sinn Féin is demanding the immediate release of Government funding to allow the project to proceed without further delay.
