A group of young people from the Waterford-based SLÍ – Sustainable Living Initiative – visited Leinster House this week to meet with TDs and Senators, observe parliamentary proceedings, and participate in a dedicated policy roundtable on the climate and environment.
The visit was hosted by Waterford Sinn Féin TD Conor D. McGuinness, who arranged a full programme for the group, including gallery access to Dáil and Seanad debates and a roundtable with members of the Oireachtas. The discussion included Sinn Féin spokespersons on Climate, Energy, Environment and Transport Deputy Pa Daly.
“This was a brilliant group of young people – engaged, informed, and committed to building a better, more sustainable Ireland,” said Deputy McGuinness. “They came not just to listen, but to be heard – raising strong and practical ideas on climate action, sustainable transport, youth issues and community resilience.”
The delegation included members of the Youth Advisory Climate Council (YACC) established by SLÍ, who were invited to share their views and recommendations directly with national legislators.
Deputy McGuinness said that the voices of young people are too often excluded from the political process: “These young people are already leading in their communities. It’s long past time they had a seat at the table when it comes to the decisions that will shape their futures.”
The group’s presence was noted in the Seanad, with speakers welcoming their visit and engagement.
“Waterford can be proud of these young leaders,” Deputy McGuinness concluded. “We need climate policy made with people, not imposed from above – and that begins by listening to the voices of young people like those in SLÍ.”
