McGuinness praises Waterford Pride groups in Dáil speech

Waterford Sinn Féin TD Conor D. McGuinness has paid tribute to local LGBTQ+ groups across the city and county in a Dáil speech marking Pride, highlighting the importance of visibility, equality and support for rural LGBTQ+ people.

“Pride is about equality, solidarity and community — and as an Irish republican, these principles are fundamental to me,” he said.

“I am proud to stand as an ally. Pride is also about love, acceptance and the joy of acknowledging and celebrating every person’s authentic self.

Visibility matters — not just in cities and the media, but in rural areas, towns and villages. Across Waterford, I’ve seen how Pride builds connection and belonging. I was proud to walk this year in Pride of the Déise and to support initiatives over the years with Dungarvan Pride and throughout the county. The message from young people, families and older LGBTQ+ members has been clear: representation matters.”

Deputy McGuinness warned against reducing Pride to symbols or gestures, saying its roots in protest must be remembered.

“From youth homelessness to mental health, LGBTQ+ people still face systemic discrimination — especially outside urban centres. Rural LGBTQ+ people deserve safe housing, inclusive healthcare and properly resourced community supports.”

He concluded by calling for greater Government investment in services that support LGBTQ+ people in rural areas and reaffirmed his support for the community across Waterford.
