Sinn Féin Encourages Waterford Farmers to Apply for Traditional Farm Buildings Grant Scheme

Sinn Féin TD for Waterford, Conor McGuinness and Sinn Féin Councillor for the Lismore LEA, Donnchadh Mulcahy, are urging local farmers and landowners to take advantage of the Traditional Farm Buildings Grant Scheme, which offers funding to conserve and repair traditional farm buildings and related structures like walls, yards and pillars. This follows news that funding drawdown in Waterford was one of the lowest in the country last year.

Councillor Mulcahy said that:
“Waterford’s farming community has a rich heritage of traditional buildings that tell the story of our rural past. This scheme is a fantastic opportunity to preserve these structures while making them fit for modern use. I encourage all eligible farmers to consider applying when the scheme reopens—it’s a win for our heritage, our farms, and our environment.”

The scheme is open to farmers in Waterford who are participating in ACRES (Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme), EIP (European Innovation Partnership) projects and the Organic Farming Scheme. Even if you are awaiting confirmation of your ACRES application, you may still apply pending approval.

Sinn Féin spokesperson for Rural and Community Development and Waterford TD Conor McGuinness said:
“There is an untapped resource here for many eligible farmers and landowners to access funding that will boost farm sustainability, by repairing structures and improving farm functionality and efficiency. The scheme also helps support wildlife with many historic buildings and walls serving as vital habitats. Our office is open to anyone who wishes to avail of more information on this grant scheme or any others.”

The application date for the Traditional Farm Buildings Grant Scheme is now closed but those interested should prepare for the next round in early 2026.
