Sinn Féin TD for Waterford and party spokesperson on Rural Affairs, Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Conor D. McGuinness TD, has pledged his support for increased investment in Men’s Sheds following a meeting with representatives of the Irish Men’s Sheds Association in Leinster House.
The meeting focused on the vital role Men’s Sheds play in communities across Ireland and the need for increased Government support to allow existing sheds to grow and new sheds to be established.
Speaking afterwards, Deputy McGuinness said:
“Men’s Sheds make an enormous difference in communities. They provide a welcoming space where people can meet, learn new skills, share experiences and, most importantly, build friendships and connections that improve wellbeing and quality of life.
“Loneliness and isolation affect people of all ages and in every part of the country. Organisations like Men’s Sheds are one of the most effective community responses we have. They create a sense of belonging, encourage active participation in local life and have a positive impact not only on the individuals who attend, but on families and communities as a whole.
“I was pleased to meet with the Irish Men’s Sheds Association to hear directly about the challenges they face and the opportunities that greater investment could unlock.”
Deputy McGuinness said Sinn Féin is developing proposals to strengthen community organisations as part of its Alternative Budget.
“As Sinn Féin spokesperson on Rural Affairs, Community Development and the Gaeltacht, I am currently working on a chapter of our Alternative Budget that focuses on tackling loneliness and isolation.
“That work includes proposals to provide stronger supports for both Men’s Sheds and Women’s Sheds. We want to see increased capital funding to help groups develop and improve their facilities, alongside sustainable programme funding that allows them to expand the services and activities they offer.
“We also want to support the establishment of more sheds so that men in every part of County Waterford, and indeed every part of the State, have access to these invaluable community spaces.
“The social return from investing in Men’s Sheds is immense. Supporting connection, friendship and community participation is good for individuals, good for communities and good public policy. I will continue to work to ensure that these organisations receive the recognition and investment they deserve.”
