Sinn Féin Councillor Conor D. McGuinness has said that the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy (RSES), which is currently being finalised, needs to include housing as a key priority.
McGuinness said:
“I have made a comprehensive submission to the Southern Regional Authority regarding their draft plan. My submission calls for the development of sufficient quantity of public and affordable housing in Dungarvan and West Waterford to be seek as a key infrastructural priority in the strategy.
“Housing supply needs to keep pace with population growth and economic development. The provision of housing that is affordable and accessible to workers is vital to social wellbeing, the development of sustainable communities, securing inward investment, and the creation of jobs.
“Economic growth in Dungarvan has not been matched by growth in the number of homes available to buy or rent. Successes in tourism and in other sectors has further increased demand locally, and increasing house prices and rents are making it especially difficult for younger families and individuals in Dungarvan and its surrounding areas.
“An increase in supply is the only long-term strategy to address the growing housing need in West Waterford.”
