Families in Waterford Deserve Homes – Not a Second Housing Minister

The Government’s appointment of a so-called “Housing Czar” is nothing more than an expensive job share – one that highlights, not solves, the dysfunction at the heart of housing policy. For families in Waterford who are stuck in emergency accommodation, priced out of the market, or living in overcrowded conditions, this move offers nothing.

Instead of delivering homes, this Government is inventing titles. The role is effectively a duplication of what the Minister for Housing should already be doing. It’s a costly exercise in political deflection at a time when urgency and accountability are desperately needed.

Speaking today, Waterford Sinn Féin TD Conor D. McGuinness said:

“This is a deeply cynical move. What the Government has announced is a job title, not a housing solution. It’s a duplication of the Minister’s role – and a costly one at that.”

“For families in Waterford and across the State who are living in emergency accommodation, stuck on housing lists, or watching local supply dry up, this is an insult. What they want is a Minister who will do the job – not outsource it.”

“Sinn Féin has made clear that real change in housing means building public and affordable homes at scale, using State land, reforming planning, and tackling land hoarding. No amount of ministerial rebranding will deliver that.”

“The public deserve answers – not job titles. They deserve action – not another layer of bureaucracy. The Government can’t subcontract leadership. If the Minister for Housing can’t deliver, he shouldn’t be in the job.”
