McGuinness welcomes social media code of conduct for councillors

Guth láidir don Ghaeltacht geallta ag McGuinnessSinn Féin Councillor Conor D. McGuinness has welcomed the publication of a new voluntary code of conduct on social media for councillors in Waterford. The West Waterford councillor spoke in favour of the proposal in the Council chamber last month.

McGuinness said:

“In a week where the impact of personalised social media commentary has come into sharp focus I am glad that this code of conduct has been published. All Waterford City and County councillors are invited to sign the voluntary code of conduct, which commits signatories to not engage in personalised or abusive posts or comments on social media, and to remove inappropriate comments left on their pages.

“There is an onus on us all to be measured, respectful and fair when we engage in political discussion and debate. This is as true for social media as it is for the council chamber. It costs nothing to be courteous and I hope that this new code of conduct will underscore that.”
