Sinn Féin Councillor Conor McGuinness and former Councillor Brendan Mansfield are set to lose their beards in aid of Pieta House. The pair will shave their beards at 8:30pm on Friday 8th May, the eve of the annual Darkness Into Light event, which has been cancelled as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
McGuinness said:
“Pieta House provides free therapy to those engaging in self-harm, with suicidal ideation, or bereaved by suicide. 80% of its income comes from community fundraising.
“Unfortunately Covid-19 means that this year’s Darkness into Light fundraiser for Pieta House has been cancelled.
“My fellow SF activist (and campaign manager in last year’s election) Brendan Mansfield and I will do our bit to fill the gap! If we can raise €500 between now and 8:30pm on Friday 8th May we will do the unthinkable and shave off our beards!”
“Our plan is to do a special broadcast this Friday on Facebook Live so you can tune in and watch the destruction. We have set up a Facebook fundraising appeal for Pieta House so all donations go directly to the organisation. All donations are gratefully received, and you can find full details by searching ‘McGuinness & Mansfield Charity Beard shave’ on Facebook.
“Remember, Pieta House is asking everyone to show solidarity with all those affected by suicide by withing the sunrise from your home at 5:30am on Saturday 9th. Wear something yellow, light a candle and share your photos.
“If you’re affected by suicide or suicidal ideation you can call Pieta House on 1800 247 247”
